The Coweta County Community Chest
and
Civic Council
In January 1957, the citizens of Newnan and Coweta County came together and created the Newnan/Coweta Community Chest and Council in an effort to help strengthen the community by raising money for the many worthwhile causes that existed.
The Community Chest held a "United Fund" campaign each year and never missed a fundraising goal. The Community Chest ultimately rolled into the United Way and later became part of the United Way Atlanta.
Today, Coweta County has over 115,000 citizens, several active civic organizations and many worthwhile causes that still need the support of the community. As we have grown, so have the needs of our citizens. There has never been a more opportune time for us to come together as a unified organization to create an impact for the critical issues facing us.
In 2005, we, the newly organized Coweta County Community Chest and Civic Council, are stepping up to the plate to provide a clearing house for all those in need, and those who have both time and funds to give. We will provide the people of our community a place to seek funding without having to go door to door. We will provide the agencies with profound need a place to come to seek funds and volunteers. We will give our citizens a chance to get involved and know who is in need. We will be the one-stop-shop for those looking for a cause to support and place to make donations.
The Coweta County Community Chest and Civic Council, Inc. has and will support a network of services that will help to sustain our children, families, seniors and community.. In addition, the Community Chest will serve as a catalyst for community collaboration.
The Community Chest accomplishes its objectives in four ways:
- Meeting individual needs.
The Community Chest meets individual needs through grants. These grants will be available for the following areas:
- Healthcare needs for children not addressed by social services
- One-time limited financial assistance for rent, mortgage payments, etc. due to extraordinary circumstances, such as catastrophic loss or illness.
- Immediate assistance to local families in crisis.
- Meeting the needs of community agencies.
The Community Chest will annually select four or five community non-profit agencies that it will support either financially or with volunteer support. In 2006, the Community Chest supported the following agencies:
- Coweta County Food Pantry,
- Council on Aging—Meals on Wheels Program,
- Community Welcome House, and
- Newnan Coweta Habitat for Humanity.
- Having special community projects.
The Community Chest will periodically have special one-time projects that will address a community need and benefit the residents of Coweta County. In 2006, the Community Chest began the Home Missions Program. This program is designed to help members of our community with home repairs when they don’t have the resources or ability to accomplish them on their own.
- Providing a community non-profit network.
The Community Chest, in the effort of building community collaboration, will develop a central database of non-profits located and serving Coweta County, Georgia. In additional to contact information, this database will list what services provided by the listed agency.
